Summary:
The project is aimed at children and young people from the municipality of Belogradchik, who will have the opportunity to participate in a cultural project and improve their access to art and culture. Three workshops have been formed for this purpose. The “Theater” workshop will be responsible for assigning roles in the play, conducting table rehearsals, and analyzing characters, conflicts, and situations. The “Dance and Music” workshop will focus on selecting music and preparing choreography for the performance. The “Scenography” workshop will work on set designs and costumes. As a result of the work in these workshops, a musical performance titled “In Search of Baro Mangipe” will be created, showcasing the richness of Roma culture, lifestyle, and traditions and offering a fresh perspective on the “mundane” theme of love.

“This project is an initiative of the community center in Belogradchik, under Norway’s Strategy for Roma Integration. The project includes several schools— theater, scenography, and dance. We are now at the final stage. We aim to stage a play similar to ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ but set in the context of Bulgarians and Roma, not Montagues and Capulets. A Bulgarian boy falls in love with a Roma girl; this is roughly the plot, inspired by the storyline of ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ Irina Florova leads the theater school, Svetlomir Petrov, a dancer in the Ensemble who studies dance arts, leads the dance segment, and a local girl leads scenography and painting. Over 30 young people will perform on stage, with more than 50 engaged throughout the project in scenography and dance. The project includes Bulgarians performing traditional dances and a Roma dance,” said Valeri Tsvetkov from the Razvitie Community Center, Belogradchik (for BNR Radio Vidin, 01.02.2024).

Over 50 children were trained for a year in the project’s schools. The premiere performance took place in Belogradchik and was also shown in the villages of Oreshets, Drenovets, and Archar, as well as at Bishop Sofronii Vrachanski Primary School in Vidin’s Roma neighborhood “New Road.” The final performance in Vidin’s Drama Theater, as part of the municipality’s Easter program, was a resounding success.
